⚠️𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭/𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐟 ℙ𝔼𝕊 𝟒𝐭𝐡 & 𝟓𝐭𝐡 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬⚠️, The purpose of this letter is to inform you that your student will take the computer-based Grade 4 or 5 Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) Writing assessment on April 2, 2024. The B.E.S.T. Writing assessment is administered in one 120-minute session, and students may work up to half of a typical school day. If you or your student would like to review the computer-based practice test at home, the practice tests and answer keys are available at https://fsassessments.org/families.html. Please review the following policies with your student before testing: 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀—Students are not permitted to have any electronic devices, including, but not limited to, cell phones, smartphones, and smartwatches, at any time during testing or during breaks (e.g., restroom), 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺. If your student is found with an electronic device or is found using Bluetooth/wireless headphones/earbuds during testing, his or her test will be invalidated. 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗰𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁—All tests include a Testing Rules Acknowledgment that reads: “I understand the testing rules that were just read to me. If I do not follow these rules, my test score may be invalidated.” Prior to testing, test administrators read the rules to students, and students acknowledge that they understand the testing rules by clicking a checkbox beside the statement in the secure browser indicating they understand the testing rules. 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴—The last portion of the testing rules read to students before they click the box to accept the Testing Rules Acknowledgment states that because the content of all statewide assessments is secure, students may not discuss or reveal details about the test content (including the passages, prompts, and writing responses) after the test. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as texting, emailing, or posting to social media sites. Please make sure your student understands this policy prior to testing and remind them that “discussing” test content includes any kind of electronic communication, such as texting, emailing, posting to social media, or sharing online. 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀/𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀. 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆—Students are responsible for doing their own work during the test and for protecting their answers from being seen by others. If students are caught cheating during testing, their tests will be invalidated. In addition, the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) employs Caveon Test Security to analyze student test results to detect unusually similar answer patterns. Student tests within a school that are found to have extremely similar answer patterns will be invalidated. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘀—If your student leaves campus before completing a test session (e.g., for lunch, an appointment), he or she will not be allowed to return to that test session. If your student does not feel well on the day of testing, it may be best for him or her to wait and be tested on a make-up day. Please remember not to schedule appointments on testing days. 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀—If your student has an Individual Education Plan (IEP), a Section 504 Plan, or is an English Language Learner (ELL) or a recently exited ELL, please contact the school to discuss the testing accommodations that will be provided for your student. If you have any questions related to this test administration, you may contact Mr. Zachary Harvard at harvardz@highlands.k12.fl.us. For more information about the Florida Statewide Assessments program, please visit the portal at FLFAST.org. Thank you for supporting your student and encouraging him or her to do his or her best during this test administration. 𝓢𝓲𝓷𝓬𝓮𝓻𝓮𝓵𝔂, 𝓜𝓻. 𝓩𝓪𝓬𝓱𝓪𝓻𝔂 𝓗𝓪𝓻𝓿𝓪𝓻𝓭, 𝓐𝓼𝓼𝓲𝓼𝓽𝓪𝓷𝓽 𝓟𝓻𝓲𝓷𝓬𝓲𝓹𝓪𝓵

𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐲 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐓𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐚𝐲𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 On Sunday, March 10, 2024 our clocks will “Spring Forward” an hour, resulting in darker morning commutes. What does that mean for students? The beginning of Daylight Saving Time (DST) means that students and families should consider extra safety measures when traveling to school and bus stops. 𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙬𝙖𝙡𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙧 𝙗𝙞𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙡: • 𝙒𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙗𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙧𝙨. It will be darker on the way to school. Students should wear bright colors to be spotted easily by motorists, or wear a backpack, jacket, or hat featuring reflective fabric. • 𝘿𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙜𝙤 𝙖𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙚. If old enough to walk or bike without an adult, arrange travel to school with a friend or group, as well as wearing bright colors. • 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙮 𝙖𝙡𝙚𝙧𝙩.It is easy for students to get distracted by their phone, cars, and other pedestrians when walking to school. Remind them to keep alert and aware of their surroundings, and walk on the designated sidewalk or walkway. • 𝘾𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙩 𝙨𝙖𝙛𝙚𝙡𝙮.Students should maintain focus and look for oncoming traffic in both directions before crossing the street. It's also important for them to continue looking for vehicles until they have finished crossing. 𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙪𝙨: • 𝙂𝙚𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙪𝙨 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙥 𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙡𝙮. Arrive at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive at the bus stop. Ensure that your child is 6 feet (or three giant steps) away from the curb/roadway at all times. • 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗻, 𝗼𝗳𝗳, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘆. Remind them to wait until the bus is completely stopped and the door is open before attempting to enter or exit, and use the handrail on the stairs. When the bus is in motion, everyone should stay seated, keep all body parts and school materials inside the bus, ensure the aisle is clear of books and bags, and use a seatbelt if one is provided. • 𝘼𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙪𝙨.The United States Department of Transportation states that almost all bus-related injuries involving children happen outside and around the bus. The ”danger zone” is considered 10 feet around the bus on all sides. Students should never walk behind a school bus and always make eye contact with the bus driver before crossing (at least 10 feet) in front of the bus to ensure that you are seen. If your child drops something near the school bus like a phone or a book, the safest thing for them to do is to get the bus drivers attention, then tell the bus driver right away before attempting to retrieve the item.
